J. Sheridan Le Fanu Article by Matt Cowan
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin in 1814. He was the grandnephew of playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan. He went to law school but decided to take up journalism instead of practicing. He owned several newspapers for a time and often contributed stories to Dublin University Magazine, of which he eventually took charge. After his wife Susanna died he became a virtual recluse and devoted himself to full time writing. His writing, I’ve found, tends to be peopled with extraordinary horrors, which always seem to stand out in my memory, generally due to their oddness. He is probably best known for his vampire story “Carmilla”, which has been credited as being an inspiration to Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula. Le Fanu’s impact on modern horror has been extensive. Ghost story master M.R. James sited Le Fanu as a major influence. Rich Ristow, author of the new novelette, Into The Cruel Sea, had the following to say about Le Fanu.

Cushing
Peter Cushing was in every horror movie ever made in the 60’s and 70’s. Well, maybe not, but I think he was in every movie they used to play on Saturday afternoons when I was growing up. I wish they’d play those great crappy horror movies again somewhere. AMC...how about playing some real classic movies?
Horror Films: Interesting Link
Nancy sent in a link to an interesting article on horror films. It covers films from the very earliest to pretty much the present day. Good read if you enjoy fine cinematic horror!
Thanks Nancy!
Article Delay.
I know I haven't put up a new article this month, but I do have an excuse. I've been working on a story I want to submit to an anthology. It has a submission deadline of May 1st, and I think I'm going to just squeak in before that time. I will make sure I have a new article up here in early May. Sorry for the delay.
- In case anyone is curious, the upcoming article will be about J. Sheridan Le Fanu.
Vintage Horror Radio Returns Soon!
I apologize for the lack of new Vintage Horror Radio Shows over the past month. I didn't realize it's been that long! These shows take a bit longer to put together than the other shows, and thus have taken a bit of a back seat to all the other podcasts.
I'm working on getting something together for episode 12...Coming Soon! I swear!
MOST MEMMORABLE HORROR NEMESIS
I was trying to think of what some of the more memorable creatures/characters were from either horror short stories or novels. They could be memorable due to their eeriness, appearance, dialog, horrific-ness, whatever. Here are a few I thought of:
- Minheer Vanderhausen from Schalken The Painter (short story) by J. Sheridan Le Fanu He is discribed as a man wearing Flemish clothing and:
