Robert W. Chambers Article by Matt Cowan
Robert W. Chambers was born Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1865. He became a successful artist, selling works to several magazines and publications of the time. He later turned his attention to writing, publishing his first novel (In the Quarter) in 1887. Chambers wrote in multiple genres, but his biggest success was his weird fiction collected in “The King in Yellow” (1895). The majority of the works included in this collection revolved around a play that is brilliant and yet insanity provoking in anyone who reads it. In some cases it seems to bring supernatural entities after those who read it. He included the fictional realm of Carcosa in “The King in Yellow”, which was an invention of author Ambrose Breice. Vintage Horror Radio 36
Our Halloween programming ends this week with another short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Berenice was first published in 1835 in the Southern Literary Messenger, and was the cause for many letters to their editor regarding the violence of the story. We'll hear a radio adaptation done by the CBS Radio Mystery Theater.

This week we continue our Edgar Allan Poe radio adaptations with The Fall Of The House Of Usher. GREAT SHORT STORIES FOR HALLOWEEN LIST by Matt Cowan
I have written a number of articles detailing short stories of several great horror writers over the past two years and have enjoyed nearly all of them. This year I thought I would assemble ten ghastly tales that seem tailor made for the Halloween month. The stories that made this list were included because they had great atmosphere, terrifying supernatural happenings and some malevolent entity at work. I limited my choices to one per author. The fact that most of them do not actually take place at Halloween is immaterial. The overall ambience and themes contained within them perfectly coincide with the most haunted of months. They are not listed in any order other than by their publishing date, as I love them all too much to rank them otherwise.
Horror Stories: Two More Classics
I'm in the process of posting some classic horror short-stories in the Horror Stories section of the site. You'll find a link to that on the left in the site navigation. Newly posted is the Sheridan Le Fanu story mentioned in the last Vintage Horror Radio titled Strange Event In The Life Of Schalken The Painter. Also available is the H.G. Wells story The Red Room.
There will be more to come not only from those authors, but others as well. These stories should make a fine addition to our collection here!
